Re-tweeting is the new linking out
There’s a new(ish) website called retweetist which shows the top links that are being tweeted by people on Twitter. There are some big numbers there – articles being tweeted by over 100 people. When you consider how many followers those 100 people have then you’re looking at some serious amount of traffic being driven to a site purely from the viral effect on Twitter.
I’ve always been a big advocate of linking out to attract people to your website and the same goes for re-tweeting. It doesn’t cost anything to tweet a URL that you’ve enjoyed but it can deliver some nice benefits.
For a start, it provides valuable, useful content for your followers on Twitter – and that should always be your first intention. Secondly, it encourages people to tweet your own work.
I’ve got a pretty big following on Twitter so if I tweet a URL then it drives a noticable amount of traffic to the site. That puts me onto their radar and they’re usually kind enough to re-tweet some of my stuff. This generates a lovely virtuous circle that ends with a nice lump of traffic coming to my blog via Twitter. That, in turn, generates more followers on Twitter. It might even generate more links to your website!
Please let me know how you get on !
